About

Philip Clarke studied Fine Art at Loughborough University School of Design and Creative Arts. After graduating in 2012, he returned to his hometown of Nottingham, becoming a member of Fishergate Point Studios. He has recently relocated to Bideford, North Devon, where he continues his art practice from a home studio.

Philip’s principal work is a study of the landscape, but with an eye to places that are apparently unremarkable; “looked at, but not into”. Attention is often given to urban environments or man-made features within the landscape which would commonly be overlooked.

Paintings and drawings are informed by snapshots from Philip’s lived experience. Particular attention is given to capturing the effects of light, mood and atmosphere to communicate the feeling of a specific time and place.

“There is infinite variation in nature due to the constant fluctuation of light and atmospheric conditions. I am interested in the dialogue between these effects and the landscape; how seemingly commonplace and banal places can take on a transient significance .”

The work seeks to encourage the viewer to reconsider their perception of their surroundings. It attempts to capture the fleeting moments in which even the most mundane aspects of our surroundings are imbued with a subtle beauty.
